Kentucky Free Marriage Records

By Ben Kingsley

Kentucky is an open state since it has implemented the Freedom of Information Act. An open state means that its local residents can request for any of their personal documents whenever they have a need for it. One of the many files they can request is the Kentucky marriage license records.

Residents of Kentucky request for a copy of a marriage record for a number of reasons. Such document is used as the primary source of information when conducting genealogy research. It contains information that is vital in updating the family records. The document is also an important file that is necessary when doing transactions with any government offices. Transactions such as insurance or any matters related to the finances and the dependents of a couple would call for a copy of such document. Aside from this, a marriage certificate is also used by those who conduct a background check on the marital status of an individual. It is mostly people who wish to make sure that they are dating an unattached individual that conducts such background check.

Details about the marriage of a couple are what the document focuses on. One would know the complete names of the bride and the groom as well as the date and the place where the couple got married. The document would also show some personal details of the bride and the groom such as the birth details, residence address and occupation at the time of the marriage. Additional information that can be found on the file includes the names of the witnesses and the parents of the couple.

In Kentucky, requesting for a copy of a marriage certificate has to be done at the county where the marriage took place. Although the Vital Records Section manages and archives the marriage records of the state, the said office is not allowed to release a copy of such file. The office can only verify the information as to where the document can be obtained and this verification cost only $6. When the request is made at the county where the marriage has been registered, another processing fee has to be paid. The processing fee is not the same for all the counties of the state.

Marriage records that occurred from June 1958 are the only documents that can be obtained from the state of Kentucky. An application form has to be filled out with the basic information of the marriage license that is being requested. The one who filed the request has to indicate their personal details on the request form along with the reason for requesting it. One is only given the freedom to request for a copy of a marriage certificate if they are the bride or the groom and immediate family of the couple. The office accepts mailed-in request, however, it is not the fastest method.

Marriage and divorce records in the state of Kentucky can now be obtained conveniently with the help of the Internet. This means that the marriage records can be requested even without going to any office. This is faster and at the same time hassle free. There are even some websites that offer to get the document without paying a cent.
