Reasons Why Parents Choose Reggio Emilia Schools In Mclean VA

By Anita Ortega

Loris Malaguzzi taught for most of his life and saw the impact that the Second World War had on his students. He thought that a new style of learning was needed to help students combat the stress and trauma of that event and still be successful. In order to do this, teachers at Reggio Emilia Schools in McLean VA have to ensure that their students are able to be useful in life.

The curriculum is built around principles which help societies to thrive under adverse conditions. These values include respect and responsibility. Students in Reggio Emilia Schools are also shown how to live in community and this is held up as a value which should be preserved. In this way, these children should grow up to be adults who are equipped to make a valuable contribution in the world.

Children are offered an atmosphere of enrichment and full support. They can learn at their own pace in a manner that is described as self guided. This means that teachers allow each student to learn by giving them as much time as they need, instead of rushing through a particular area just to keep up with the rest of the class.

Educators utilize their own unique method of teaching. All of the schools which are a part of that system are focused on improving preschool and primary education. Their methodology was developed by Loris Malaguzzi along with mothers and fathers of his young students in Italy.

Instead of having a teacher giving them oversight, teachers plan activities which allow students to discover how things work on their own. Discovery learning is nothing new and is used in other school systems. However, in the Reggio Emilia method, more emphasis is placed on it in order to encourage a child in developing learning skills which will help them to be successful in adulthood as well.

Most people use movement in their learning. Some people do so more than others because kinesthetic learning is their preferred style. However, the traditional school system that many people nowadays grow up in requires that students sit still for long periods and they miss out on the information they would get by moving around and exploring their world with their senses. Reggio Emilia institutions allow students to have a relationship with other people in their environment and explore tangible things through touch and with their eyes and ears.

Since the children direct their learning, they experience less pressure. Each opportunity to encounter something new is seen as a way to add to their knowledge and the focus is taken off passing and failing. They get an education that helps them achieve their own goals because the knowledge that they gain in pre school is based on things that are actually important to them as individuals.

In this teaching method, children gain skills they actually need. They do not just sit and try to absorb whatever information is handed down to them. Since these skills were discovered by them, they are more likely to remember how to do things or apply their skills when they encounter new problems in life.
