What You Should Know About Navicular Syndrome

By Minnie Whitley

There are some horses that find it difficult to walk. Sometimes this syndrome would happen to them between ages four to nine years old. You could refer to it as Navicular Syndrome. There are those who call it a disease because different parts of their foot can be affected when they have this one. It is usually seen in the front feet. One may have seen it in the rear feet but that is really a rare case.

There are some breeds that are much affected by this compared to other ones. There are some breeds that react to this problem differently. For others they might feel that it is crippling but there are some who will just ignore this.

There are a number of theories which explain what might be causing this to start. They have first thought of this as some kind of arthritis which one would get from so much pounding. They have conducted studies so horse owners will have an understanding on this. But, what they know for sure is that there are some traits you could use to determine soon if they will be suffering with it.

It indicates that those having the history on their lineage who suffered from this will be prone to have this too. They would be able to inherit it from parents and from grandparents too. If they will have traits like those then it is sure they will experience such case too.

They have also proven that when your techniques for trimming or shoeing is improper could contribute to having the syndrome much faster than normal. If the horses are doing strenuous work, they will also have this faster especially if they have the traits. It also happens to those who are working on improper ground conditions for a long time where the surface is too hard. Sometimes, even the diet could also be another factor.

Its front foot which got affected would change in its look as the years go by. Its severity would also increase. Its foot will be contracted on the heels and will also be shrinking its size. It would appear boxy in shape as the years go by. That will become much smaller than the ones that are not affected.

Those that have the history on their lineage would suffer this. This has been confirmed as true since that is passed from generation to generation. If you have a horse that has a smaller foot that supports the body weight then it has high risks on having this. As the owner, you must be able to condition it before they are about to perform some tasks.

Its best treatment is using a shoe that is capable of supporting and protecting the heel. This aids to lessen paid they would feel. The toe of its shoe needs to be shaped in a manner which eases movement. Do this until the time that the angle and position is back in its shape.

If you provide proper care and treatment to them, they will be useful for years. Aside from that, they will also be in a good condition. One could do that by letting their horses have more exercise and a balanced diet.
